Programming Languages on Time Line

Posted by Sandeep Jain on March 4, 2007

Almost a month ago, I had put my words about the existence of more than 2000 programming languages. To add to that here is the excellent time line showing programming languages from November 1954 to December 2006. It shows the step by step development of the various versions of the languages like Python, COBOL, PHP, Java, Perl, FORTRAN and more.

The time line although not viewable properly, stand as amazing visual aid in understanding the evolution of the programming languages. Some of the comments from “StumbleUpon” web site given by it’s users…

Hierarchical breakdown of programming languages. I like how they separated PHP for the versions where it was being developed in parallel. And who knew Ruby has been around for 10+ years?…..said by mack

I like how this site depicts the history of computer langauage. The diagram demonstrates new direction taken by the two most popular computer languages and their diversions to somewhat simplify each… What this diagram also does Well, is educates. It educates and informs those who knows nothing about computer language. …said by beverly
