New GRE remains the Old GRE

Posted by Ronald Bhuleskar on April 4, 2007

Gre Update

This could be a great relief to the students who didn’t get seats before the new pattern of GRE. Now you guys and gals don’t have to worry about that because the ETS (Educational Testing Service), who conducts several tests worldwide, has come to a decision on April 2 that the pattern of the GRE would not be changed. The plan proposed to have new pattern since September 2007. The reason behind this cancellation is that the plan for the revised test was supposed to be delivered to the network of above 3000 test centers across the world. But the ETS officials could believe that the test for all students could be conducted confidently. Even they said that they could not guarantee access to all students who want to take the Exam; they also stated that they are satisfied with the current pattern. The revised pattern would even be at risk to students who use their score in taking admissions.

Executive Director of ETS says “After Much Debate we are finally on a conclusion that the current pattern of GRE offers much more convenient and flexible opportunities to test”

The registrations which is been closed in India and several other counties will be reopened soon so as to accommodate the application deadlines. The ETS Officials will work with the GRE Board to make some changes in their test content for the improvement in the current pattern without the access issues, which was a heavy risk in the proposed pattern.

Appoint Online Password Manager – Clipperz

Posted by Sandeep Jain on April 3, 2007

Read Full Entry

With the increasing effect of the web 2.0 services we are creating accounts and profiles at more and more web sites. Each of this web service provider have a different format of password and thus making hard to remember the passwords. All your worries about password remembrance, are solved by the new online service called “clipperz”. The website that promise to preserve all your password with a few clicks, and provides you with an auto login facility from any computer. They promise to keep all your password safe and secure. They also saves information about your credit cards, PINs, software information and lot’s more private information. Here is there promo image, which claim to save variety of information…

Clipperz, use a standard strong encryprtion scheme, which is based on your passphrase(password of clipperz), which is only known to you. Even though they claims to be most secure one, but as of me I can’t rely on them. It’s better for the sites like, digg, del.icio.us, stumbleupon, blinklist, and other sites of such kinds. Hey! don’t even dare to use this kind of services for your mail accounts!!

Actually when I tried using the service, I found that it’s somewhat cumbersome to repeatedly add cards for various login accounts. Although good at work, but I would rarely care to use it. Clipperz has the limitation that it works only on the “Firefox” browser, and most of the cafe’s don’t have Firefox installed at least in India, thus decreasing my chances of using it.

Normal Recording V/S Perpendicular Recording.

Posted by vineetagarwal on April 3, 2007

With reference to my previous article on An Alternate Solution to Hard Drive Recording, I would now want to explain u’ll how this fascinating technology works.
1)Write Element:
The write element is the head and it is basically an electromagnet which when supplied with current, generates a magnetic field that changes the north and south of the tiny particles on the writing medium (this is how the data is written in the drive). In the longitudinal magnetic recording system, the magnetic field that is generated by the electromagnet has a higher longitudinal component than the perpendicular component.

“Longitudinal component means the strength of the electromagnetic force is greater in the direction that is longitudinal or parallel to the axis of the magnetic medium on the hard disk platter.”

In PMR (Perpendicular Magnetic Recording) the tiny magnets on the recording media are magnetically oriented in the north south direction. To achieve efficient writing in the limited area that is covered by the magnets with the changed orientation, a PMR write head needs to generate magnetic fields in such a way that the perpendicular components are than the longitudinal components.
A “single pole” PMR head combined with a soft-under-layer (SUL) offers a strong perpendicular write field, while the longitudinal component is much reduced making the magnetic field more intense and focused.
Rather than being generated from the gap between the two electromagnets, the field from a PMR write-head is generated from the pole surface and collected by the SUL.
The corners of a rectangular pole will cut into neighboring tracks when the head is operating at a skew angle.
In modern drives, the head has a skew angle with respect to the track direction when the head operates at the inner or outer radii of the magnetic medium. Fabricating a narrow trapezoidal pole with a well-controlled angle is essential l to prevent the fields from the pole surface erasing data in neighboring tracks.

2)Recording Medium:
The recording medium used here is a type of “granular” media, comprised of magnetic alloys containing cobalt, chromium, platinum (CoCrPt) and an oxide grain-boundary segregant. The smaller size allows writing of more data in less space. This material is highly coercive means that the alloy is a magnetically stronger medium. This makes a distinct advantage as it becomes capable of retaining the magnetic charge even when there are high thermal variations inside the hard drive.
In other words this medium provides better areal density which in turn provides more storage!!

3)Soft Under layer:
The unique feature noted about this recording technique is the “Soft Magnetic Under layer” incorporated into the disk. This under layer conducts the magnetic flux very easily.

“Magnetic flux is the unit of measurement of the strength as well as the range of the magnetic field.”

When a current is passed through the writing head, flux concentrates under the small pole-t ip and generates and intense magnetic field in the short gap between the pole-tip and soft under layer. The recording layer that stores the data is directly in this gap where the field is most intense. Higher fields allow ‘higher coercion’ media to be used. Such media require higher fields to set the magnetization is inherently more stable.
The presence of the soft under layer also strengths the read back signals and helps decrease interference from adjacent tracks

4)Read Element:
The read element is basically made up of a “giant magneto resistive” device known as the GMR. Basically this device measure small changes in magnetic field. As the magnetic bits on the hard drive pass under the head, the current decreases due to resistance and theses changes in the current are measured to figure out what the bit contained.
This is how data is basically read off the hard drive.

5)Shield:
The shield helps in keeping the magnetic field from affecting stray parts of the head. This ensures that the neighboring magnets do not lose their orientation thus preventing loss of data due to loss of magnetic orientation.

Number2 is Number 1 for GRE

Posted by ashwinmayya on March 30, 2007

–>>More on this
Today we review an online tutorial website- Number2.com. With content and quizzes for GRE, SAT, ATC, it is a boon to lakhs of overseas study aspirants. It has to be the most comprehensive online preparatory website today. And what’s more- ‘It’s free’.

The tutorials are divided into sections, and contain material essential for students. The course includes vocabulary builder, tutorials and practice sections that adapt to the ability of the student. The site also keeps track of your progress- report cards, attempted questions etc. Dictionary meanings of some words are embedded in the webpage. On the flipside, it is a bit frustrating at times. For instance, you need to click on each of the answers to a practice question before you know the correct answer, which could be tedious. Probably, more number of questions in the practice question and a better, faster user interface would help. Otherwise the online course offered is simply awesome.

Overall, I would fully recommend this site. If not thorough practice, a glance down the content once in a while would be fun, and informative.Thumbs Up for Number2.com

Brain Vs Computer

Posted by Sandeep Jain on March 28, 2007

We all know that, computer do job faster than brain, but have you ever thought that, the computer are made by human and not the vice versa, so why underestimate the brain. Brain is the father of computer.

Differences By Chris Chautam:

He have written a fantastic comparison, between the Brain and Computer. He writes…

Although the brain-computer metaphor has served cognitive psychology well, research in cognitive neuroscience has revealed many important differences between brains and computers. Appreciating these differences may be crucial to understanding the mechanisms of neural information processing, and ultimately for the creation of artificial intelligence.

He also write about, one bonus difference, where he visualize the fact that, the brain is much much and much bigger than the computers.

Difference and Similarity :

Very basic comparison between the brain and computer have been listed at this web site(Neuroscience for kids).
