Super Superstition

Have you “K”oticed that there is something “K”orny about the “K”aption I have used.That’s because I have been bitten by the “K” bug,or in short the unnatural phenomenon propagated through the medium of television started by a lady who knows how to keep the TRP of your television show on a high. I am, as u might have noticed till now, referring to “K”ueen(read Queen) of Indian television ,EKTA KAPOOR..She has indeed reached the heights of superstitious behavious one can manage to reach. Everything she touches has “K” in it. So much so that even the starting date of the program is set depending on position of the sun and the distance between the earth and the moon(I am not kidding!!).But she is not the only one who is so superstitious.apna Dada Sourav Ganguly mentioned in an interview that he always starts wearing the cricket gear from his left hand and then the right hand.he says it brings him luck(After the interview, he was out of the cricket team for a year!).Why are the elite in the society behaving in this way,one must ask our forefathers.In earlier prehistoric times, men could not explain various natural phenomenon like thunder, lightning and climatic changes. He knew little about the sun, moon, comets and meteors. So he formulated his own theories about the phenomenon, thus leading to the first kind of the superstitious beliefs. A superstition is usually born out of fear, which is contrary to reason and cannot be proved by experience. For instance a comet was a mysterious phenomenon, and was considered unlucky- assign of imminent war. some numbers and animals were also considered unlucky.However with advancement in science and people’s thinking, people have started to understand more about the world around them. However there will still be many Ekta kapoors in the world who will keep the tradition going forward. God help them!!!

The early 20th century America was run by the Mafioso—The Italian Mafia.This is a Fictional tale of the rise,fall and then an ultimate Victory over the entire Crime -Syndicate of New-York city.

Its almost 1945,New York City. Don Vito Corleone(Marlon Brando) is the ageing Patriarch of the Corleone Family….the Corleone Gang.He runs his illegitimate Businesses of gambling,casinos,black-markets through the Genco-Puro Olive Oil Company.He has five children Santino ‘Sonny'(James Caan) ,Freddric ‘Freddo'(John Gazale) ,Adopted Son Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall) ,Micheal (Al Pacino)and The daughter Connie(Talie Shire) .

When Don Vito’s Godson —The Famous Singer Johnny Fontane is in need and a particular Film Producer wont help(Jack Waltz) he wakes up one day to find his beloved Horse’s Head on his bed. Some punks ,beat up the daughter of a friend (Amerigo Bonasera) of the Don. They are beaten up mercilessly by some unidentified men(scene not in the movie).When a particular baker friend needs some help with the modification of immigration laws Don Corleone gets it done from his contacts in the Government by passing a new bill.This is the extent of the Godfather’s reach and power.But every man has ONE DESTINY …..so says Don Corleone….even he has one.When he refuses to do business with a Narcotics man Virgil ‘The Turk’ Solllozo he is gunned down by some hitmen in broad-daylight.

The Godfather survives the hit and Sonny takes charge of the matters.He goes aggresive aginst the other Famlies(Read: Gangs).Sollozo calls for a peacful -meeting…appeal for truce….Micheal meets him….and bids him goodbye……he ends up killing Sollozo and his Bodygaurd Police Cpt Mc-Klucksey.

Micheal goes to Sicily hidding from the cops and the rival Families.Sonny operates Things with his Fist.His hot temper leads to his down fall….he is gunned down by the Tattaglia-Barzini Men .Distraught,the Godather calls for peace-talks.He arranges for the safe return of Micheal from Sicily.

The Godfather dies of a heart-attack.

Micheal the new Don arranges for a final climax .The Final Baptism(of Connie’s Son) Sequence involves a bloody victory over the entire NewYork Crime Syndicate.The Corleone Family Becomes unchallegeable once again.

ACHIEVEMENTS

1) In 1972 this movie won:= the Best Film,Actor(Marlon Brando),Screenplay(Mario Puzo,Francis Ford Coppola) .

2) It was nominated for := Supporting Actor(James Caan,Al Pacino,Robert Duvall),Director(Francis Ford Coppola) , and many more

3) One of the most remarkable features of this movie was its Soundtrack which boasted Nino Rota’s Italian scores–The Godfather Waltz,Godfather tarantella,The Baptism Sequence,Speak softly love and many more.

4) This movie proved to be a huge success for James Caan,Robert Duvall and especially Al Pacino ,who went on to become one of the Best Actors ever.

CAS(hing) in on DTH

With CAS being launched in Southern Mumbai and expected to be launched in the Suburbs soon, one would be in dilemma on what to opt for- CAS or DTH. Let us inspect what case each has to make.

CAS, or Conditional Access System, requires a Set top Box (STB) which will decrypt the digital signals transmitted by the Cable Operator. So you will receive only those channels you wish to receive. STBs come in the price range of Rs.1800-Rs.3000 on a one time payment basis. They may also be available on a rental basis. Under CAS, the subscriber will have to pay an amount appox Rs.5 per ‘pay-channel’ per month he wishes to receive. ‘The free-to-air’ channels will be available free though. Some competitive STB providers include Hathway, Siticable. Other services like games, radio may also be provided at a nominal price.

DTH, or Direct-To-Home Television, is CAS without cables. It is wireless transmission to individual homes through satellites. A Personal dish would be installed at each home to receive the signals. DTH operators in Mumbai include Dish TV, TATA sky to name a few. Installation charges would be in the region of Rs.2000-4000. Monthly subscription fees would be separate.

What to prefer?

Though DTH eliminates the ‘cable operator’ as in CAS, channels may be bundled together under one package in DTH. So under DTH, if one wants one or few channels, you might have to pay for and receive a whole package of channels, unlike CAS. Also, pricing of CAS appears more at the moment. All for CAS!

CAS/DTH both score Cable-TV

1. Watch and pay for only what you want.
2. High-handedness of Cable Operators ruled out.
3. Better signal quality.
4. More channels to chose from
5. Other new-age services included under CAS/DTH.
